Oak Haven Farms: A Story Rooted in Faith

Oak Haven Farms, located in Semmes, Alabama, is not just a farm—it is a living testimony of God's faithfulness, a place birthed and sustained through prayer, and a daily reminder that our story is truly His story.

Oak Haven Farms

How It Began

In 2006, Joseph and Sara met in church. Joseph had been asked to teach a Sunday School class, and one Sunday morning, a kind-eyed young woman named Sara walked in. With the heart of a gentleman, Joseph asked her if she’d like to grab dinner and get to know each other. That simple invitation would change the course of their lives.

Joseph, a country boy at heart, was living in a neighborhood but longed to return to the land. Sara, raised in the city, always dreamed of wide open spaces and a simpler life. Together, they began praying that God would bless them with land—a place to grow roots, raise a family, and live out their purpose.

For years they prayed, and for years the answer seemed to be “wait.” Work dried up. Finances grew tight. At one point, they nearly lost their home. In faith, they rented it out and left Alabama to follow job opportunities in other states. Joseph, bound and determined to provide, worked hard. Through countless miles, long nights, and the struggles of raising a family on the road, they never stopped believing that God was leading them.

When their children reached an age where moving from school to school was no longer healthy, Joseph and Sara felt it was time to come home. Sara pursued a real estate license so Joseph could stop traveling and come back to his family. Not long after earning her license, Sara ‘accidentally’ sold their house in Alabama—proof that God was already orchestrating their return in detail.

Then one Sunday in 2021, after church, they went driving and stumbled upon a piece of heavily wooded land just north of Semmes. It was raw. It was thick. But to them, it was perfect. They cashed in their savings, rolled up their sleeves, and began the hard but rewarding work of clearing it and setting up their homestead. That 20-acre patch became their haven—and so Oak Haven Farms was born.

What once felt like unanswered prayers was, in truth, God's detailed and intentional plan. Every delay, every hardship, every mile on the road was a part of the path He had laid out for them. What they asked for in faith, He answered in abundance.

Jojo’s Story: A Life That Inspires

The very week they moved back home, their daughter Jojo began feeling unwell. Concerned and unsure what was wrong, they rushed her to the hospital. To their shock, she was in full-blown diabetic ketoacidosis. Her blood sugar had soared to dangerous levels. It was a terrifying moment for the family—but God's grace was again evident. Jojo recovered and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

The diagnosis changed their lives, but it didn’t define them—it inspired them. Jojo, full of life and light, became the “face” of Oak Haven Farms. She began filming cheerful farm videos, sharing her journey with T1D and spreading joy to others. “Jojo’s videos” quickly became a favorite among farm visitors and followers, and Jojo, without even trying, became a voice for T1D awareness and resilience.

Through her, Oak Haven Farms found a greater purpose: to not only grow food, but to nurture hope.

What We Do

After settling into their land, Joseph obtained his General Contractor’s license, and the family began building not just infrastructure—but a way of life. They tested various crops and found their sweet spot in peppers, which led to the birth of their signature product: Mama P’s Sassy Sauce. Tangy, bold, and made with love, it quickly became a customer favorite.

Today, Oak Haven Farms:

  • Grows and sells produce, with a specialty in peppers
  • Mass-produces Mama P’s Sassy Sauce
  • Raises sheep and chickens
  • Sells farm-fresh eggs
  • Promotes T1D awareness through events, outreach, and Jojo’s story

Our Mission

At Oak Haven Farms, our mission is twofold:
To nurture life from the ground up—by sourcing and supporting local farms and businesses—
and to spread awareness, education, and hope for families impacted by type 1 diabetes.

We believe in hard work, local community, clean food, and most of all—faith in Jesus Christ. Every seed planted, every fence post driven, and every bottle of Sassy Sauce we sell is a reminder that what began in prayer has grown into a testimony of God’s grace.
